The shoe on a reciprocating saw is adjustable, which allows greater access to different areas of the blade and can extend the blade's life. For better control with certain cuts, use the shoe as a fulcrum. It can also be used to pin down flexible material, like sheet metal, while cutting. During general maintenance this shoe is often mis-placed and can even be worn down with general wear and tear and need replacing.
