It acts as a guide and a guard, to make sure the blade is cutting straight, and also to stop you going too far into a cut. As this piece is constantly rubbing up against the materials you are cutting, and also getting hit with flying debris, this part can wear down and even snap off. In these instances you will need to replace this part.
