Retaining rings are small parts that ca easily be lost or broken. They are responsible for gripping parts together to help in the opertaion of the machine. This particular ring is located in the trigger assembly of paslode nail guns and staplers. If you have lost this part it is important to replace it as it has a very important job in allowing the gun to fire when the trigger is pulled.
