The riving knife is a safety feature installed on some saws to ride a fixed length away from the blade in relation to its height. This will keep the cutting material at a distance from each other, stopping it from getting caught or stuck behind the blade, which could jam or cause a kickback.
As wood is constantly passing around this, it can become sticky and worn over time. So from time to time this will need to be replaced. Additionally, you should not be using a saw without one of these or something similar.
